    Gary North, on his member website, brought out an interesting and little-discussed idea today in an article entitled, 'You Would Be Wise to Include In Your Plans What Adam Smith Said About Gold and Silver':

Many gold investers, North points out, have rushed out and bought gold coins recently because they believe that when everything collapses, gold will make them rich.

"Not likely," says North.

"First, they are not rich now. Gold will not make them rich. We are at the edge of the abyss of mass inflation. Mass inflation will make everyone poor.

"Will you get rich? That depends on where you live, what you do for a living, and whether you are a great entrepreneur. Owning gold coins could make you rich or lead to your kidnapping or murder.

"'Oh, Dr. North, you don't really think it could ever come to that!'

"Yes, I do.

"'But Dr. North, I buy gold because I think everyone else will be busted, but I will be rich.' "I see. Everyone else will knuckle down because you have gold. They will not try to get their hands on it by force. Nice dream. Terminally naive.

"If society breaks down, it will be like war."

North then quotes economist Adam Smith, and adds, "In a war, a nation runs out of everything very fast. The gold is gone. Or, as the Bible says of Egypt in the second year of the famine under Joseph, the money failed. (Genesis 47:15)."

In the end, North points out, what is crucial for national survival in war is the same thing that is necessary for individual survival: "something you produce that someone else wants to buy."

"If mass inflation goes on for several years, people with gold will be impoverished."

"In a real crisis, you will sell your gold to buy necessities. Prices will rise in terms of gold. The money will fail. Got it?

"Really, do you get it? If not, read Genesis 47."

North goes on to say that if you do buy and hold gold, and you keep your mouth shut about it, you may "preserve your capital to rebuild after the disaster. Or you may buy your life in a real breakdown. Those are good reasons to hold gold coins."

"You will not get rich if your timing is bad. If you think gold will save you, your timing will be bad.

"If you don't think you can earn a living in the crisis, then you had better buy necessities now. If you think the crisis will be bad enough to make you rich by owning $10,000 in gold coins, buy necessities now. Keep your moutn shut, too. Buy the necessities you may be forced to buy with your gold. Buy them now. Hold your gold for paying off your mortgage in mass inflation. Hold it for the post-inflation depression.

"There are no silver bullets, or gold ones, either.

"Depressing, isn't it?

"It will get a lot more depressing."
